Use the guiding questions that we came up with in class to describe a standards-based lesson. This lesson could be one that you make up or one that you watch on video. Important: Be sure that your learning objective aligns with a curriculum standard.
I. Standard Benchmark(s) and Learning Objective:
The students will be able to recognize each of the following coins, penny, nickel, dime, and quarter, there names and the values of each of them. The students will also learn how to make a dollar from using all of these coins.
Some benchmarks would be, one day we will focus on the values and recognition of the coins and then move on to putting coins together to make larger values.
II. The Learning Environment
The learning environment will be in a classroom with students desk as well as a teacher desk including work stations in the back of the room as well as a reading rug. The students desk will be set up in groups of four for this activity. The students will be able to work with each other so that they can help each other understand the activity.
III. The Learning Activities
The learning activites will include the following:
The students will be given one of each coin (P,N,D & Q).
They will be taught what each of the names and the class will repeat them outloud.
They will then be taught what each coin is of value.
After that the children will be give a ditto in which they have to label each coin and value.
There next assignment will consist of a list of items with prices. Little prices such as 10 cents, 30..etc. For each item they will also be given a different array of coins and they will be asked, Do you have enough to buy this item?
The students will have to count to figure out if they have enough change or not.
IV. Assessment Strategies/Items
The students will be able to count and put together coin amounts to understand what makes up a dollar etc.
The teacher will test the students at the end of a review after working on the assignment.
The students will also be able to take what they learned and apply it to real life when wanting to buy things at the school store or lunch.
